Job Description

The Senior Researcher or Researcher position (one position is available, title depends on experience) will support the research initiatives of NCAI, and will be responsible for helping NCAI in its work to ensure that data informs policy through the following activities: disseminating policy briefs, reports and updates on current policy research data; analyzing data to inform policy on tribally-driven priorities; supporting Tribal Nations as they build research capacity; providing technical assistance to researchers working with Tribal Nations; promoting respectful tribal academic research partnerships in the context of tribal sovereignty; creating spaces in which Tribal Nations, researchers, federal agencies and other can connect, discuss, and collaborate on policy research; and convening stakeholders to discuss research/date that informs and supports strategic, proactive policy development. The incumbent will work on a team of 2-5 people and will report to the Director of Operations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Under the direction of NCAI's Director of Operations, the primary duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Lead or participate in the design, management, conduct and evaluation of research projects
  • Assist in the develop and oversight of research/data management policies
  • Conduct analyses of quantitative/qualitative data from research projects/program evaluations;
  • Develop policy briefs, reports and other written communications;
  • Develop tools and deliver presentations on research regulation and ethics trainings;
  • Manage all aspects of federal, non-profit or private grants, related to research and data equity work;
  • Assist in writing research grant applications and identification of potential sources of funding;
  • Deliver presentations, coordinate webinars, trainings, and meeting/conference sessions;
  • Assist Director of Operations and other team members with other administrative, programmatic and research duties as assigned;
  • Review and develop recommendations for comments to federal requests for comment;
  • Supervise junior staff and fellows on research related work as assigned;
  • Contribute to overall NCAI activities, such as general support of conferences and events, through completion of other team-based duties as assigned; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated research project management skills, including grant writing, grant management, project work plans, timelines, budgets, organize meetings, develop meeting materials, coordinate communication with partners, manage timely completion of progress reports and deliverables, ability to work on multiple projects at once;
  • Demonstrated skills in writing professionally and for community dissemination, design of graphs/charts, publication design and formatting, and producing online/social media content;
  • Demonstrated skills in public presentations in both academic/research and community contexts,
  • Positive attitude, positive teamwork approach, and ability to adjust to changing priorities and growing responsibilities, ability to take direction, work independently, take initiative within areas of responsibility, in a very team-oriented environment;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills;
  • Precision and attention to detail, and excellent time management skills;

Education/Experience:

  • Advanced educational degree, minimum Master's degree or doctoral degree in public policy, public administration, education, health, public health, law, economics or a related field;
  • At least 3 years of experience conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research and program evaluation, analyzing data using statistical software, and data management; Project management experience
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for working in fast-paced, dynamic, and high pressure environment with changing priorities and deadlines;
  • Three or more years of experience conducting research with AI/AN individuals or tribal communities, knowledge of research ethics and regulation issues in Native communities, experience working in tribal policy research preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Compensation:

Commensurate with experience and educational qualifications.

Work Hours and Environment:

  • This is a Forty (40) hours per calendar week position, fifty-two (52) weeks per calendar year; provided, however, during the time periods leading up to, during, and immediately following NCAI conferences and similar events, involvement up to Sixty (60) hours per week may be required.
  • This position is remote eligible.
