Schedule Details:: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 4:00 pm, must also be available for occasional snow plow and on-call shifts.
Description We're on the lookout for a Senior Forestry Maintenance Technician to join the City Forestry Division of our Parks & Recreation Department.
In this role, your primary focus will be to maintain and develop the City of Durango's urban forest, which includes just
over 12,000 trees of more than 20 different varieties within city limits. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of activities, including
pruning, chipping, stump grinding, tree removal, new tree installation , and ongoing tree maintenance. Operating under the general guidance of the Arborist Supervisor, you will also provide leadership and direction to seasonal and part-time staff.
Additionally, you will support the Parks, Trails, Cemetery, and Open Spaces divisions by assisting with
turf, irrigation systems, and equipment maintenance to ensure all areas are safe, clean, and welcoming for the community to enjoy.
Essential Job Duties What You'll Do in This Role: - Maintain the City of Durango's urban forest by:
- Pruning trees
- Chipping branches and debris
- Grinding stumps
- Installing protective fencing
- Removing hazardous or dead trees
- Installing new trees
- Performing routine maintenance of existing trees
- Maintain a safe work environment for both staff and public.
- Apply your knowledge of basic tree species to perform effective maintenance practices.
- Use Geographic Information System (GIS) technology for tree inventory mapping.
- Provide support to keep parks, trails, cemetery, and open spaces in proper repair.
- Operate and maintain a wide range of equipment for comprehensive grounds maintenance, including:
- Snow removal equipment
- Power tools, such as chainsaws, leaf blowers, and weed trimmers
- Heavy machinery, such as backhoes, dump trucks, farm tractors, and Toolcats
- Must be able to obtain Commercial Driver's License within six months of hire.
Minimum Qualifications You Have: - Equivalent to completion of high school or GED.
- A valid state Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one.
- Two to three years of experience in forestry or equivalent education, training, and experience.
- Understanding of arboriculture and tree species identification.
- Familiarity with the practices, methods, and materials used in grounds maintenance, including operation of irrigation systems.
- Knowledge of hazardous chemicals, herbicides, and fertilizers.
- A strong commitment to adhering to safety standards and practices.
