A Phlebotomist I provides customer service and skilled specimen collections, ensuring the validity and integrity of clinical specimens. Performs blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups. Ensures doctors’ orders are executed correctly, special specimen handling for esoteric testing, handling and processing of legal specimens. Works in a very fast paced environment with frequent exposure to a variety of biohazards. Performs clinical duties in accordance with population specific guidelines and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined in policy and procedures. Requires good interpersonal and customer service skills, manual dexterity, problem solving, and ability to perform under stressful emergency medical situations. Proficient computer skills necessary to operate computer systems and Microsoft Office Products. Responsibilities include performing phlebotomy techniques professionally, routine venipuncture, micro-collection and special collection techniques, following safety guidelines, coordinating special collections with other departments, delivering clinical specimens efficiently, operating centrifuge, processing outpatients timely, coding laboratory orders accurately, performing effectively in emergency situations, ensuring specimen integrity, maintaining quality assurance logs, prioritizing work to meet turnaround requirements, performing drug screen collections following chain of custody protocols, and assisting in training new phlebotomy employees or students. Physical demands include lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs occasionally, moderate vision requirements, frequent kneeling/stooping/bending, occasional standing/walking, and occasional pushing/pulling. Job requires reading, writing, reasoning, talking, and keyboarding. The role is part of a team committed to professional growth and development through continued education and annual competency assessments.
