About the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Chemistry & Biochemistry has vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs, with 420 undergraduate majors and 190 graduate students, and an extensive research portfolio. Approximately 2/3 of our undergraduate body is Biochemistry majors. We take pride in both our high-quality instruction and attention to student advisement. Job Summary




FACULTY POSITION IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

The SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY & BIOCHEMISTRY of the GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY seeks a permanent teaching faculty member, for employment on our Atlanta, GA campus, at either the Academic Professional or Senior Academic Professional level, to serve as coordinator for our organic chemistry laboratory (CHEM 3371) course. The coordinator for the CHEM 3371 course is additionally expected to provide lecture instruction in the undergraduate organic chemistry sequence. The position will have lead responsibility for the development of course content and pedagogy in their laboratory course and serve as part of the department's undergraduate advisement team. This is a permanent position with both academic instructional and administrative responsibilities. Academic Professionals (AP's) at Georgia Tech are non-tenure track, academic faculty with a well-defined promotion path. Credit towards promotion can be given for prior relevant experience. We strongly encourage applicants with interests in evidence based instructional methods and chemistry education research.

Responsibilities




The coordinator for the CHEM 3371 course will have responsibility for all aspects of the delivery of this organic laboratory course, which serves as the second semester of organic lab for our biochemistry majors, to ~70 students a year spread between the Fall and Spring semesters, and lead responsibility for the development of course content and pedagogy. Additionally, this person will be expected to teach one lecture class in our organic chemistry sequence in each of the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters, and provide academic advising to 40-50 of our approximately 400 undergraduate majors.

Required Qualifications

Academic Professional

  • Terminal degree in organic chemistry or related area
  • Significant related experience or promotion from the rank of Associate Academic Professional
  • Quality of performance and potential development must be recognized by peers

Senior Academic Professional

  • Terminal degree in organic chemistry or related area
  • Evidence of superior performance in the chosen field
  • Recognition by peers (whether national, regional, or local)
  • Successful and measurable related experience
  • Five (5) years or more as an Academic Professional

Preferred Qualifications




  • A Ph.D. in organic chemistry or biochemistry, at the time employment starts.
  • The ability to teach and mentor a distinct student body.
  • The ability to engage in high-impact practices that support deep learning for student success.
