About Kara and Javier

Javier Antar

Javier Antar has been traveling the world since 2000 to inspire students and audiences through his teaching and performing of Argentine Tango. When Javier discovered tango it quickly became a nightly obsession. While he studied with several well-known instructors, Gustavo Naveira became Javier’s most important influence, a source of inspiration and learning.

Now, after many years of intense training in Buenos Aires, and armed with a very strong knowledge of technique, music and a sense of the dance as a whole, Javier is at the top level as a dancer. His message and philosophy: conquer your own style. His musicality, grace and elegance make Javier a riveting dancer to watch, his technical knowledge makes his dance fluid and precise.

Javier is known for his generosity as a teacher. While his group lessons require focus and work, he also gives students an important degree of freedom so that students can use what they have learned and add their own new material. Based in Buenos Aires, it is easy to find Javier performing and teaching at local milongas or practicas, when he is not touring. These days it’s not unusual to find international and well-respected tango instructors taking group or private lessons with him in Canada, Europe or in Argentina.

Kara Wenham

Kara was first introduced to tango in 2000. Prior to that she worked professionally in the theatre, with acting and dance forming the primary components of her artistic training. She received her BFA in theatre from Emerson College before founding the Concrete Stage Company in Chicago.

Once immersed in the tango in Buenos Aires, her primary teachers have been: Gustavo Naveira, Andrea Misse, Pablo Villarraza, Dana Frigoli, Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa. For six years she danced professionally with Matias Facio, with whom she participated in International festivals in Argentina, Europe and Asia.

As a dancer, Kara moves with great presence and vitality. Hers is a subtle and communicative dance that is inspired and guided by the music, as well as the nuances of the embrace. She aims to achieve a personal tango aesthetic that clearly transmits and evokes her inner sensibility.

As a teacher, Kara has developed a hands-on approach that allows her students to immediately entrain to a technique that they can both feel and understand. Her pedagogy is designed to give students the necessary tools for continued training and for developing their own dance style.

Kara has lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina since 2001. When she is not touring abroad, she often teaches and performs in different venues around Buenos Aires. In 2009 she formed her partnership with tango dancer, Javier Antar.

TANGO JAM with Homer Ladas

Tango Jam LOCATION CHANGE!!!!!!!! Please pass on the information

The Location of the Tango Jam has been changed! Eric and Lindsay will host us at Oddfellows. At 8 o’clock. The Practica is still in session!!!

Oddfellows @ 8 o’clock

2382 Hampden Ave, St. Paul, MN

Most of you know oddfellows from the Practica that goes on there every Monday evening. There will be enough space to enjoy your practica! the only difference: there will be live music to practice to!

What is a tango jam?

It is intended to foster the development of a big tango dance band in a community and perhaps beyond… In our case that means getting together with a bunch of musicians to simply JAM with each other!!!! In the past 2 years Homer has lead a jam and most of us learned to listen, to sing, to enjoy tango music with different ears.

Each musician or singer will be assigned by Homer a specific 1st, 2nd, or 3rd (etc) part or piece for each of the given songs we will be working on. When you’re playing with our group you will be responsible for your assigned part.

What do you need to do?

  • If you are a musician simply show up with your instrument ( bring your music stand)
  • If you have musician friends bring them! If you like to sing, again, simply show up.
  • If you would like to bring something to snack and share that will be great too!
  • You do not need to be a professional musician to join the tango jam. There is some room to dance as well.

When? Monday evening, March 29th at 8 o’clock
Where? 2382 Hampden Ave, St. Paul, MN ( Oddfellows)
How much? $3 ( and we would really appreciate you bringing a snack or drink to share)

Here is Homers website with some more specific info

Hear and see them jam
OR see this link to see Minneapolis Jam last year at the U of M tango jam ( on my facebook page)

For jam book info (lead sheets and lyrics) folks can download the following book:

Also, there is a lead sheet for Desde El Alma and the lyrics, and a version of Malena (in d minor ) that is available. Please send in a request and I will mail it to you.

I would really appreciate an RSVP on this, so Bob, Homer and I can figure out logistics.

Thanks!
Sabine

November 27th-29th: Maximiliano Gluzman Workshops

Dear Tangueros,

You’ve heard whispers and rumors.

It’s true: Maximiliano Gluzman will be returning to the Twin Cities for Argentine Tango workshops

Maximiliano Gluzman is a porteƱo dancer who proudly continues the tradition of his hometown’s social dance.

His tango, one of personal identity, inherits the inventiveness of the Buenos Aires tradition and was acquired through years of working with world renowned instructors, as well as through researching the social tango of the old masters. His subtle, firm lead is the result of both practice and countless nights of dancing in Buenos Aires. And through his unique, flowing musicality he has found an endless vehicle for creativity and expression.

We have gone to the Loring Pasta Bar and introduced social dancing for new tango dancers, we will also use this money to sponsor teachers that are to come to the twin cities.

For the Holidays I would like to give the money that comes in the next 3 Saturdays to an organization that does great work:

Workshop # 2 Meeting of the other tango minds
When legs are flying and elbows are protruding, because of that beautiful new tango sequence that you just learned, things can get ugly!
We open up minds to see the possibilities on the dance floor around you, with the other dancers.
Floor craft while having fun with new vocabulary on the dance floor.

CTW – Chicago Tango Week

http://chicagotangoweek.com/ctw01.html

As many of you already know Minneapolis will not have a festival this year. I would like to create an opportunity for a large group to go to a great festival “close to home”

The Chicago Tango Week! This will be held July 1st through the 6th.

I want to find out how many of you would be interested in going there. In order to keep costs down going in a group really pays off! If we have enough people we can either carpool or (even more fun) get our own bus!
If we register by March 15 we are offered an all-inclusive pass for $250. That is a steal for what you get for it! Wait till May 1st and the price would be $300 pp (many other options are described on the website, student rates will be even cheaper)

Let’s talk about who will be there: (some of my favorite masters!)

Julio Balmaceda & Corina de la Rosa
Horacio Godoy & Cecilia Garcia
Pablo Inza & Eugenia Parilla
Melina Brufman & Claudio Gonzalez
Oliver Kolker & Silvina Valz
Pablo Villarraza & Dana Frigoli

Orchestra Otros Aires

DJs Horacio Godoy, Pablo Inza and Adam Hoopengartner

Please visit their website for all other info
http://chicagotangoweek.com/ctw01.html

The hotel is great, large clean rooms. It is $90 a night, breakfast included and 4 people will have enough space to share. The Festival is held in the basement of the hotel, so no need to walk home other than the elevator to your room.

I would need to set a deadline in order for me to see if a bus would be the best route and to lock in on the cheaper group rate. So let me know as soon as possible if you would be interested in joining! And to confirm what date we would leave and come back.

Questions about Chicago Tango Week

Question: Do I have to share a room?
Answer: No you can do what ever you would like. I can book you a single room which would be $90 a night.
Question: Do we have to be there the full week?
Answer: I think that we would leave either on Thursday late afternoon (so we have the whole Friday to attend the lessons) Or Friday morning, whatever more people “vote” for.

We would most likely leave on Monday morning. Also, if we car pool, then we might have more choices among ourselves for time to arrive and leave.
Question: Do I have to get the full pass?
Answer: There are many options, but with a full pass you will have most options.

What I need to find out from you is:

  • Are you bringing your spouse/partner/friend?
  • What kind of pass are you interested in?
  • The time you are able to commit (Would you be able to leave Thursday morning/evening/afternoon – Friday morning).
  • Would you mind sharing a room?
