Curriculum Foundation 1 at SDS

This is an 8 week series, starting at the beginning of every month.

Volume 1 Close Embrace Classics

  • Week 1: Walking in parallel system plus the close embrace
  • Week 2: Rock steps
  • Week 3: Walking in cross system
  • Week 4: Cruzada
  • Week 5: Turn to the left in parallel system
  • Week 6: Pivots – backward ocho and forward ocho
  • Week 7: Ocho Cortado
  • Week 8: Ocho Cortado and review all weeks

Through out the series we will work on etiquette, musicality and partnership.

Curriculum Foundation 2 at SDS

We work in volumes at the Social Dance Studio. I would like for any student to complete at least 8 volumes before moving on to the Foundation 3 classes. Volume 1 and 2 were Foundation One, only 6 more great ones to go!!

Volume 3 the Turn to the left

  • Week 1: Turn to the left in cross system (in open embrace)
  • Week 2: Refining turn to the left (in close embrace) – musicality
  • Week 3: Options with the exit from a turn to the left
  • Week 4: Playing with the possibilities.

Volume 4 the Ocho Cortado

  • Week 1 and 2: Ocho Cortado and connection
  • Week 3: having fun with the length of steps in the ocho cortada
  • Week 4: what happens if I change my weight here? or there?

Volume 5 the Molinette (windmill)

  • Week 1: side forward side forward
  • Week 2: side forward side back
  • Week 3: applying all the technique
  • Week 4: Playing with the concept, exiting the molinette

Volume 6 Time for Fusion

  • Week 1: going from a close embrace to an open embrace and vice versa via side steps (open steps)
  • Week 2: going from a close embrace and vice versa to an open embrace via forward ocho’s
  • Week 3: using the Cruzada (cross) to go from an close to an open embrace
  • Week 4: Review and adding some flair and gusto to all these moves

Volume 7 Rocking the boat

  • Week 1: Rock steps in parallel and cross system
  • Week 2: Rock turns to the left plus embrace
  • Week 3: Rock turns to the right plus embrace
  • Week 4: Rock steps, turns, embrace and music

Volume 8 Technical Tournament (no moving forward without this one!!)

  • Week 1: using the floor? where is my axis? heels or toes?
  • Week 2: upper body movement / action and consequence
  • Week 3: Loose legs – where can I take them? and how should I make the move?
  • Week 4: is everything connected? feet/ upper body / axis / embrace. On to the new stuff

Curriculum Foundation 3 at SDS

We work in volumes at the Social Dance Studio. I would like for any student to complete at least 20 volumes before moving on to the Intermediate/Advanced classes. Volume 1 through 8 were Foundation one and two, only 12 more great ones to go!!

Volume 9 Stop That Move (following this one up with Volume 10 is recommended)

  • Week 1: a foot stop ( parada )on a side step – let’s play!
  • Week 2: foot stops in a molinette (windmill) – more playing
  • Week 3: let’s add week 1 to week 2
  • Week 4: foot stop in a back ward ocho

Volume 10 What a Drag!!! (having done Volume 9 is recommended)

  • Week 1: sweep/drag (barrida) on a side step
  • Week 2: sweeps on a forward step
  • Week 3: sweeps with a cruzada
  • Week 4: review and revamp

Volume 11 Cutting Corners

  • Week 1 and 2: rock turns (left, right, parallel and cross feet)
  • Week 3: corners to the left in cross feet
  • Week 4: back side cross turn to the left

Volume 12 Displace This!

  • Week 1: what is a displacement ( sacada) / Displacements on a sidestep
  • Week 2: displacements (sacada) on a forward step
  • Week 3: let’s combine week one and two
  • Week 4: displacement on a back step

Volume 13 Have You Met This Gancho?

  • Week 1 and 2: gancho from a forward step
  • Week 3: gancho from a backstep
  • Week 4: how many gancho’s are there? (how about the one starting with an ocho cortado?)

Volume 14 Technical Tournament #2 (no moving forward without this one!!)

Volume 16 Milonga

  • Week 1: What is milonga? basic steps
  • Week 2: Basic combinations
  • Week 3: Basic combinations continued
  • Week 4: Playing with the milonga beat

Volume 17 Single axis turns

  • Week 1: single axis turns to the left
  • Week 2: single axis turns to the left continued
  • Week 3: single axis turns to the right
  • Week 4: single axis turns to the right continued

Volume 18 Valz

  • Week 1: What is valz? Basic steps
  • Week 2: basic turns in the valz
  • Week 3: basic combinations
  • Week 4: Valz dynamics

Volume 19 Boleos

  • Week 1: what are boleos? (kicks in the air) back boleos
  • Week 2: back boleos continued
  • Week 3: front boleos
  • Week 4: front boleos continued

Volume 20 the Molinette /giros #2

  • Week 1: turn to the right with sacada
  • Week 2: the lapiz ( leader embellishments)
  • Week 3: the woman’s planeo
  • Week 4: the embrace plus basic combinations

U of M Beginner 1

There will be 12 weeks in the trimester for you to get acquainted with Argentine Tango. Please be advised that this schedule is subject to change.

After the first 4 to 6 weeks you will be ready to hit the milongas ( social dance parties!)

Walking one step outside partner with right leg (parallel)


Week3
Walking in cross system (backward ocho) plus side step /change of weight


Week 4
Crusada/cross in cross system


Week 5
Crusada/cross in parallel system


Week 6
How to play with getting in and out of parallel and cross system plus review all above while playing!


Week 7
Transition into open embrace via the parallel cross. Plus review week 1 through 6 end of lesson


Week 8
Transition back to close embrace via side (open) step


Week 9 and 10
Ocho Cortada


Week 11
Open embrace forward ochos/molinette


Week 12
Review all

During these weeks you will be taught all etiquette and fun facts , musicality and techniques too.

We will repeat all (Beginner I curriculum) that we have done, in one lesson! And add some shine and flair to it. This will be a fast moving class. If you are not new to tango but want to review, this is the class for you!
